Questions to Ask Yourself AFTER a Consultation with a New Counselor

You’ve come so far… You’ve done the research, located a few counselors that look promising and completed a telephone consultation with those counselors. Now, it’s time to decide with whom you want to begin therapy!

During the initial consultation, you may have had a gut reaction that told you the match is good (or not). If that’s the case - trust your gut! But, if you’re still not sure, ask yourself these questions to help gain some clarity.

Answer these 8 questions to determine if a new therapist is a good fit:

  1. How did I feel throughout the telephone consultation?

  2. Were my questions answered?

  3. Was the counselor on time and organized?

  4. Did I feel heard?

  5. Do I think I could grow to trust this therapist?

  6. Do I believe the therapist will be able to provide the guidance and support I’m looking for?

  7. Does therapy with this counselor line up financially for me?

  8. Does the counselor’s availability line up with mine?

Still not sure? Schedule a few sessions with the new therapist. After two or three sessions, ask yourself these questions again.
